In ancient Greece, political and military leaders frequently relied on the Oracle, a priest or priestess who divined the will of the Greek gods. In modern times, Al Goreacle has become the mediator between mankind and all divine or human knowledge about global warming or climate change. When he speaks, the world listens breathlessly.
Unfortunately, the Goreacle is having difficulty with the truth lately in his public utterances. When he ventured forth from his holy temple in Nashville to utter his wisdom on Conan O’Brien in November, he told O’Brien that the earth’s core was millions of degrees. Actually, it’s 5,000 degrees.
When recently asked about the Climategate emails and what he thought of them, the Goreacle responded that it was much to do about nothing and that the emails were 10 years old. Actually, the most recent one was from November, 2009. In most calendars, that is much more recent than a decade ago.
In Copenhagen, the Goreacle uttered his wisdom that there’s a 75% chance that the North Pole will be devoid of ice within the next 5 to 7 years. He told the audience that this was fresh research from Dr. Wieslav Maslowski. Actually, when Maslowski heard about Gore’s comments, he responded: “It’s unclear to me how this figure was arrived at. I would never try to estimate likelihood at anything as exact as this.” Oops.
The Goreacle, however, refuses to respond to any of these obvious errors. Why? Because, according to the Goreacle, anyone who doesn’t believe in global warming is just like someone who believes the moon landing was faked or someone who believes the earth is flat.
The Goreacle’s problems with the facts didn’t start recently, of course. His “An Inconvenient Truth” movie/slide show was rife with scientific errors and misinterpretations of the data on climate change.
In fact, there are so many factual errors in “An Inconvenient Truth” that Lord Christopher Monckton, former science advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, is traveling the globe with his own slide show debunking dozens of errors in the Goreacle’s Oscar winning slide show.
The Goreacle has admitted that he thinks it’s okay to exaggerate claims about global warming in order to shake people into acting:
In the United States of America, unfortunately we still live in a bubble of unreality. And the Category 5 denial is an enormous obstacle to any discussion of solutions. Nobody is interested in solutions if they don't think there's a problem. Given that starting point, I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous (global warming) is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are, and how hopeful it is that we are going to solve this crisis.
Weather Channel founder John Coleman has repeatedly criticized Al Gore and the global warming crowd over their use of seriously flawed data. In January, 2009 Coleman stated: “I am totally convinced there is no scientific basis for any of it [the claim that carbon dioxide causes global warming]. He continued: “Global warming. It is a hoax. It is bad science. It is a high jacking of public policy. It is no joke. It is the greatest scam in history.”
Years before just plain old Al Gore became the Goreacle and entered into his temple, he had trouble with truth telling. Check out a sampling of his lies and exaggerations here and here.
One can only marvel at what new lies and exaggerations he will utter when he returns from being worshipped in Copenhagen. A breathless world awaits.
