Obama Campaign: Why The Hell Did Romney Pick "Ultraconservative" Ryan?

They say "ultra conservative" like it's a bad thing. The Obama campaign has sent out another email attacking Paul Ryan in the "let's attack right-wingers" series. The latest comes from Campaign Manager Jim Messina who manages to use the word "extreme," "ultraconservative," and slam Citizens United all in one swipe.

Congressman Paul Ryan is the poster boy for the extremeRepublican leadership in a Congress whose overall approval rating is 12 percent. His plan to dismantle Medicare is deeply unpopular with the general public, and especially undecided voters.

You might be wondering why the hell Romney picked this guy. But this is a strategic pick that carries real danger for us.

Here’s the calculation: Mitt Romney doesn’t need or expect Paul Ryan to convince even one undecided voter to cast their ballot for him. That’s not what he’s on the ticket for. He’s there to reassure and inspire ultraconservativeideologues and corporate interests that they will have one of their own a heartbeat from the presidency.

That means tens or even hundreds of millions more dollars for the Romney campaign and the array of outside groups supporting him — and if current trends hold, more than 90 percent of that money will be spent on TV ads — lying, distorting and trashing Barack Obama. Those ads will have more impact on undecided voters than anything Paul Ryan himself does or says.

First off, Paul Ryan's approval rating is not 12 percent, but 39 percent with the majority of Americans having no opinion of him yet. From Rasmussen:
Earlier polling found that 39% of all voters had a favorable opinion of Ryan, while 25% offered a negative review.  Thirty-five percent (35%) express no opinion of Ryan.
Second, seniors prefer Ryan's budget plan over President Obama's.Third, as Guy reported yesterday, Ryan has received a huge bounce of support since being chosen as Romney's VP, particularly among independents.
So, why the hell did Romney choose Paul Ryan as his running mate? Because Ryan has a plan, he has a vision and he's working.
